RUSSIAN SUB MUSEUM SALUTES USS PROVIDENCEStaff and crew of the former Soviet submarine Juliett 484, moored in Providence, hail Namesake Partnership"The Saratoga Museum Foundation and the Russian Sub Museum are proud to support this move to better signify the city's appreciation for the hard work, diligence and sacrifice of those who serve aboard the Providence," Lennon said. "Also, we are inspired by the willingness of the sub's captain and crew to reach out to the city - especially to our youth. The Russian Sub Museum will be an enthusiastic partner in these efforts. In return, we look forward to becoming a submarine home-away-from-home for the Providence crew members and their families." The Russian Sub Museum, located on the Providence waterfront, features the former Soviet nuclear cruise missile submarine Juliett 484. The star of last summer's Harrison Ford movie K-19: The Widowmaker, the Russian sub has become one of Providence's hottest tourist attractions. Since opening on Aug. 5, the sub has attracted nearly 8,000 paid visitors - including numerous school groups and children's fun and fact-filled birthday parties. The USS Saratoga Foundation's acquisition of Juliett 484 is part of a continuing effort to convert the supercarrier USS Saratoga into a floating museum, education center and family attraction on Narragansett Bay. The Saratoga is moored at the Newport Naval Station pier. The long-term vision is to display the two ships - Cold War adversaries that were both decommissioned in 1994 - side by side as a Cold War museum and monument to lasting peace between Russia and the United States. The submarine is open year round. Winter hours are 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Mondays, Thursdays and Fridays, and 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on Saturdays and Sundays. The sub is closed Tuesdays and Wednesdays. She also is available for special events and private parties. Ticket prices are $5 for children; $6 for uniformed military personnel and senior citizens; $8 for all other adults. The museum is located in Collier Point Park, near the center of downtown Providence. | ||||
