Governor Carcieri kicks off Governor's Bay Day 2003 with a visit to Juliett 484 and the Russian Submarine MuseumThe museum celebrates the July 27 event by opening its hatches to the public, free-of-charge, from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m.
"We are pleased to play a role in bringing the Governor and the Governor's Bay Day to Providence,'' said Foundation President Frank Lennon. "The Providence waterfront is very much a part of the Bay and beautiful Collier Point Park one of the best-kept secrets of on the Rhode Island shoreline. We proudly support the Governor, a long-time friend of Narragansett Bay, by opening our museum to the public in honor of Governor's Bay Day 2003.'' Also featured at Collier Point Park on Sunday was a "Bay Experience'' presentation by Save the Bay educator Jim Lappert. Children and adults learned about Bay habitat and met a few of the Bay's more popular inhabitants. The Rhode Island Salt Water Anglers Association also offered a free fishing demonstration. The Russian Submarine Museum is owned and operated by the USS Saratoga Museum Foundation. The group seeks to open the supercarrier USS Saratoga, currently moored in at the US Navy facility, Newport, as a floating museum, family attraction and education center at Quonset Point. Backers of the project include businessmen and educators, labor unions, environmentalists, elected officials, veterans and citizens who have joined a non-partisan, grass roots effort to see the project through. Further information on Saratoga - as well as the Russian Submarine Museum - is available at www.saratogamuseum.org. | ||||
