The USS Saratoga Museum Foundation, Inc. will host a reception for friends and supporters on Thursday, June 15, from 5:30 to 8:30PM to celebrate the opening of their 2500 square foot mini-museum and store on the upper level of the Rhode Island Mall. The reception is being underwritten by Merrill Lynch Private Client Group and Merrill Lynch Trust Company.
"Thanks to the owners of the Mall, we now have a high-traffic retail location for our use as a mini-museum until we open the aircraft carrier to the public," said Frank Lennon, Foundation president. "We are also exploring the possibility of a simulator to attract additional visitors. This example of community involvement helps maintain our momentum," he concluded.
The Merrill Lynch involvement in this event is a continuation of that company's support, originally announced last year. "Support for this project is in keeping with one of Merrill Lynch's core principles -- responsible citizenship," said Mary E. Allyn, Resident Vice President in the Providence office.
At the reception, museum organizers will provide more details about the potential nationwide support Merrill Lynch could provide.
Over the next few months, the Museum will rotate exhibits through the mall facility, giving the public a taste of what they might expect from the Air, Land & Sea Heritage and Technology Park once it opens at Quonset Point. The first such showing will be unveiled Thursday evening--a collection of 35 glass slides depicting military exercises at Quonset during the summer of 1897. These previously unknown images depict the men and equipment of the Machine Gun Brigade, only a few months before the outbreak of the Spanish-American War.
Members of the media are invited to attend this reception.
The Saratoga Museum Store is located on the Upper Level of the Rhode Island Mall, 650 Bald Hill Road, Warwick. Phone number at the store is (401) 821-5200.
