USS SARATOGA MUSEUM TO HOST GOLF TOURNAMENT AT NEWPORT COUNTRY CLUB

The USS Saratoga Museum Foundation will hold its second annual golf tournament on Tuesday, May 21, 2002 at the exclusive Newport Country Club, second golf course opened in America and the site of the very first US Open.

Proceeds from this event will further the foundation's mission of developing a major museum, family attraction and educational center on Narragansett Bay, featuring the supercarrier Saratoga as its centerpiece. More immediately, funds raised will be used to prepare the Foundation's recently acquired Soviet cruise missile submarine for visitors in time for the July movie premier of Paramount Pictures summer release, "K-19: The Widowmaker," starring Harrison Ford.

Tee off for the best ball tournament will be at 12:30PM sharp, with registration and a buffet brunch beginning at 11:00. Special prizes and awards, to include opportunities to win a new car, a fur coat or other prizes by making a hole-in-one, are included in the registration fee.

Cocktails, dinner, an awards ceremony and an auction will follow the tournament. More than fifty raffle prizes and auction items will be available, to include Red Sox - Yankees tickets, various autographed sports items, golf clubs, rounds of golf, other sports equipment, jewelry and a host of retail donations.

"We already have more than 100 golfers signed up to play, which is very encouraging especially in light of recent events," said former Congressman Bob Weygand, chairman of the event.

Referring to the lack of support the project has received from the Almond administration, Saratoga Foundation President Frank Lennon said, "Selling out this tournament will send a strong message that we Rhode Islanders want more of a say in how Narragansett Bay is developed.

"This project will have a significant impact on the state's tourism industry. It will also create jobs, generate tax revenues and offer significant quality of life benefits. We are committed to passing the lessons of history on to our children, and also ensuring that future generations never forget the sacrifices of those who have gone before," concluded Lennon.

The USS Saratoga and its Cold war adversary, the Soviet cruise missile submarine, will be the principal elements of a self-sufficient Heritage and Technology Park. The Foundation's mission is to honor veterans of all services; educate the public about the cost of freedom; and motivate youth th rough innovative programming.

Development of this project will include a world-class museum, an education and entertainment complex, and family recreation area overlooking Rhode Island's most precious resource, Narragansett Bay.

Backers of the USS Saratoga Museum project include businessmen and educators, labor unions and environmentalists, elected officials, veterans and citizens who have joined a non-partisan, grass roots effort to see this project through. Further information is available on the Foundation's regularly updated website: http://www.saratogamuseum.org.
