SARATOGA PROJECT EARNS MATCHING GRANT FROM FEINSTEIN FOUNDATIONAll donations received by the USS Saratoga Museum Foundation, Inc. between November 15 and December 31 were eligible for participation in a $100,000 matching funds challenge from the Alan Shawn Feinstein Foundation. On February 5, Philanthropist Alan Shawn Feinstein handed out checks totaling $100,000 to local agencies that participated in his $100,000 end-of-the-year holiday challenge. We aggressively promoted this opportunity through e-mailings and on our website. We are pleased to report that we raised $43,015.06 during that period, from a total of 29 donors (one contributor donated in excess of $16,000; seven others put in between $1000 and $5000). In all, 142 groups in Rhode Island, Connecticut and Massachusetts took part. The Rhode Island Community Food Bank emerged as the contest's biggest winner, capturing a $16,066 grant, based on a reported $549,000 received from donors in the last six weeks of 2001. Together, all the participating groups -- whose numbers ran the gamut from agencies such as the Salvation Army and Travelers Aid to various school groups that wanted to do something for the needy -- brought in nearly $3.5 million, according to Feinstein. Saratoga Museum's share of the matching funds -- $1258.80 -- will be used to support community outreach programs, such as those involving veterans in need. Our plans also call for establishing educational opportunities and safe havens for disadvantaged youth.
