RUSSIAN SUB

From Helsinki to Rhode Island, by way of the movies:
the story of Soviet submarine K-77

Juliett 484

Juliett 484 is a non-threatening, almost inviting, name for a 91-meter steel submarine of 3,174 tons displacement. To be honest, however, the sub's builders in the former Soviet Union knew the vessel by a rather duller title: Project 651, Vessel K-77.

The name Juliett was a NATO invention. It was used, in the absence of anything better, to describe the class comprising sixteen new guided-missile submarines that appeared under the world's seas in the mid-1960s. They were spotted shadowing American aircraft carriers in the North Atlantic and in the Mediterranean.

This article from the International Edition of the newspaper Helsingin Sanomat appeared in the weekly supplement Nyt. The author, journalist Sami Soininen, explains what happened to Juliett 484 - a familiar sight to Helsinki residents for several years - after she was disarmed and decommissioned, and suggests that she may have found her aircraft carrier - at last.
