RE: Tall Ships Invitation

As many as 60 Tall Ships, including ten of the world's largest sailing vessels, will come to Newport at the end of June as part of the Tall Ships 2000 Transatlantic Race. Recognizing this once-in-a-generation opportunity, the Foundation has chartered the deluxe 63-foot Dutch sailing yacht Brandaris for a series of cruises on Thursday, Friday and Saturday, June 29 -July 1, 2000.

The BrandarisBuilt in Holland in 1938, she made a colorful escape from the German occupation. Significantly, Brandaris returned to help in the 1940 evacuation from Dunkirk, rescuing 300 British troops from certain capture or death.

Brandaris herself is one of the Tall Ships (albeit one of the smaller ones!) participating in the Newport activities. As such, you will be aboard one of the participating vessels, as opposed to a spectator boat. At the very least, we can expect extra courtesies from the captains and crews of the other Tall Ships.

Some of the Tall Ships (such as Spain's 370-foot, four-masted topsail schooner Juan Sebastian de Elcano) will return for the first time since the magnificent Bicentennial celebration in the summer of 1976. Other major participants include Russia's 376-foot four-masted barque Kruzenshtern, and Portugal's 300-foot, three-masted sailing barque Sagres II, originally built as a German Navy training ship in the 1930s (and sister ship to the US Coast Guard barque Eagle).

Tall ShipsIf past Tall Ships events are a guide, hundreds of thousands of visitors will throng Newport for a glimpse of these majestic and historic vessels. Want to avoid the crowds, the traffic and the hassle? Here's your chance to view the spectacle up close and in comfort, aboard one of the historic ships actually participating in the event!

Since our charter spreads over three days we are able to offer a wide range of nautical experiences, each of which will be accented by appropriate cuisine and beverages.

Tall ShipsWe will start each cruise with a unique waterline perspective of the aircraft carriers Saratoga and Forrestal, as well as the battleship Iowa.

Thursday is arrival day; we hope to greet Tall Ships as they enter Newport Harbor. On Friday evening, after a Newport Harbor tour of the Tall Ships, we will relax at anchor for the evening fireworks and musical extravaganza. We will spend the day Saturday (and Saturday evening!) gently cruising in and among the Tall Ships, enjoying all that glorious, world-class Newport has to offer during a major sailing event.

Net proceeds will benefit our efforts to create the non-profit Air, Land & Sea Heritage and Technology Park at Quonset Point, featuring the retired supercarrier Saratoga as its centerpiece. USS Saratoga Museum Foundation, Inc. is a recognized 501 (c) (3) charitable corporation.

We hope you will be able to join us. As you can imagine, the number of people we are able to accommodate is strictly limited, so we urge you to make your reservations quickly. Call 401-823-4200 to reserve your space today.

Preliminary Schedule/Cruise Options

Tall ShipsPLEASE NOTE: This is DRAFT information, provided as a guide to assist you in exercising your advance booking privilege. IT IS SUBJECT TO CHANGE, depending on event scheduling.

We are planning to embark and disembark in or near Middletown, at a location to be announced. Final details will be confirmed as soon as possible.

THURSDAY, JUNE 29

This is arrival day for many of the Tall Ships, and Brandaris hopes to sail out to meet them as they make their triumphant entries into Newport Harbor. We do not have detailed arrival dates or times; however, vessels are scheduled to arrive all day.

Both morning and afternoon cruises will start with a visit to Coddington Cove, where we will view the aircraft carriers Saratoga and Forrestal, as well as the battleship Iowa, from a unique waterline perspective. USS Saratoga Museum Foundation, Inc. officials will relate the history of the ships and describe the plans for the attraction at Quonset Point.

It will take us about 20 minutes to reach the Newport Bridge, where we might cruise by early arriving Tall Ships already moored near that structure. In about five more minutes we will be in the heart of the mooring area just outside the busy Newport Harbor.

If, as and when other Tall Ships arrive, we will sail to greet them and escort them in. Otherwise, we will circulate among those already moored. At the appropriate time we will sail back to Middletown to disembark.

Morning option: 8:30AM-12:15PM. A "Sailing Brunch" will be served, featuring fruits, pastries, breads and cheese, washed down with our own special Grogs. Wine, beer and soft drinks will also be available. COST: $100 per person

Afternoon option: 12:45PM-4:30PM. This cruise will feature a "Sailing Luncheon" consisting of gourmet sandwiches, fruits, breads and cheese, cocktail hors d'oeuvres and appropriate lubrication. COST: $125 per person

All day Thursday, June 29 option: 8:30AM-4:30PM. Combines both of the above. COST: $210 per person

FRIDAY , JUNE 30

We will have one departure, scheduled for 6PM. Space will be at a premium on Friday evening due to the scheduled band concerts and fireworks.

The sun will be well below the yardarm as we depart, so refreshments and hors d'oeuvres will be available very quickly. Once again, we will start with a tour of Coddington Cove and the warships anchored there. We will motor down toward Newport, enjoying the Tall Ships glowing in the approaching sunset. We will select the best possible vantage point from which to enjoy the fireworks and drop anchor. Our guests will then enjoy special light dinner buffet prepared by our culinary experts, set off by a selection of wines and other beverages.

When the last roman candle has sputtered to the water, we will motor back to Middletown. COST: $150 per person

SATURDAY, JULY 1

The schedule for the Saturday morning and afternoon departures will be similar to Thursday. However, since all participating Tall Ships will be moored, this should be a gentle day on the water.

Once again we will view the aircraft carriers Saratoga, Forrestal and the battleship Iowa from a unique waterline perspective. We will motor down to Newport, where the day ashore will be filled with art festivals, tall ships exhibits, picnics, and concerts. We will cruise right up to other Tall Ships; who knows, we might even be invited aboard! (No promises, but we'll give it a shot.)

Morning option: 9AM-12:30PM. A "Sailing Brunch" will be served, featuring fruits, pastries, breads and cheese, washed down with our own special Grogs. Wine, beer and soft drinks will also be available. COST: $100 per person

Afternoon option: 1PM-4:30PM. This cruise will feature a "Sailing Luncheon" consisting of gourmet sandwiches, fruits, breads and cheese, cocktail hors d'oeuvres and appropriate lubrication. COST: $125 per person

Saturday evening cruise: 5PM-9PM. There are block parties at Fort Adams and the Newport Yachting Center. If we can make the necessary arrangements, it may be possible to spend some time ashore. Otherwise, our itinerary will be similar to the day cruises. Hors d'oeuvres, a light supper and appropriate refreshments will be served. COST: $125 per person

Saturday cruises may be combined, and a small discount will be available for such bookings. Please see Booking Form for details.
