RUSSIAN SUB

Russian Submarine Museum to Co-Host Cold War Conference

We are pleased to announce that the Russian Sub Museum in Providence, Rhode Island, will be co-hosting (with the Naval War College, Naval War College Foundation and Brown University) a major "Cold War at Sea" conference from 4-12 May. The highlight of the events is the visit of a delegation of about 15 former Soviet Navy officers, including four who served aboard Juliett 484, the cruise missile submarine now owned by the Saratoga Foundation and on display on the Providence waterfront.

The Cold War Museum in Virginia and the Central Naval Museum in St. Petersburg, Russia are also supporting this event.

The academic sessions are capacity-limited, and the academic module at the Naval War College requires a separate registration (for information please call 401-841-6549).

On Sunday, May 9 there will be a Victory Day Open House at the Russian Sub Museum to observe the Russian defeat of Nazi Germany in 1945. Visitors are invited (free of charge) to attend the event that will include: a press conference and Q & A session with former K-77 crewmembers, Cold War experts, and honored Russian guests, and the chance to meet noted Cold War author Francis Gary Powers, Jr.

Visitors may tour the submarine at the regular admission cost of $8 for adults. In addition, visitors may purchase advance tickets ($50) to attend a VIP reception and tour of the submarine after the park has closed to the public. The following day (Monday, May 10), the academic sessions continue at Brown's Watson Institute, including a luncheon talk by Francis Gary Powers, Jr. about the famous U-2 incident. (Luncheon tickets are $25).

All proceeds from non-War College events will go to the continuing restoration of the submarine.

The Russian online news magazine PRAVDA has published an article about the conference and the associated events - you can read about it here: http://english.pravda.ru/world/20/91/368/12592_ColdWar.html.
